Khan at an event for Dhoom 3 in 2013, which ranks among the five films starring Khan that have held the record for being the highest-grossing Indian films.[1]
Aamir Khan is an Indian actor, producer, director and television personality. Khan first appeared on screen at the age of eight in a minor role in his uncle Nasir Hussain's film Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973).[2] In 1983, he acted in and worked as an assistant director on Paranoia, a short film directed by Aditya Bhattacharya,[3] following which he assisted Hussain on two of his directorial ventures--Manzil Manzil (1984) and Zabardast (1985).[3][4] As an adult, Khan's first acting project was a brief role in the 1984 experimental social drama Holi.[5]
Khan's first leading role came opposite Juhi Chawla in the highly successful tragic romance Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988).[6] His performance in the film and in the thriller Raakh (1989) earned him a National Film Award – Special Mention.[7] He went on to establish himself with roles in several lucrative films of the 1990s, including the romantic drama Dil (1990), the comedy-drama Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), and the ₹871 million (about US$24.5 million in 1996)[I]-grossing romance Raja Hindustani (1996).[8][9] He also played against type in the Deepa Mehta-directed Canadian-Indian co-production Earth (1998).[10] In 1999, Khan launched a production company, Aamir Khan Productions,[11] whose first release Lagaan (2001) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film,[12] and earned him the National Film Award for Best Popular Film.[13][14] Also in 2001, he starred alongside Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna in the acclaimed drama Dil Chahta Hai.[15]Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai are cited in the media as defining films of Hindi cinema.[16][17] After a four-year hiatus, Khan portrayed the eponymous lead in Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005), a period film that underperformed at the box office,[18] after which he played leading roles in two top-grossing films of 2006--Fanaa and Rang De Basanti.[19]
Khan made his directorial debut with Taare Zameen Par in 2007, a drama on dyslexia starring Darsheel Safary, in which Khan also played a supporting role.[20] The film proved to be a critical and commercial success,[11] winning him the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare.[21][22] Khan played a man suffering from anterograde amnesia in the 2008 thriller Ghajini,[23][24] after which he portrayed an engineering student in the comedy-drama 3 Idiots (2009),[25] and a reclusive artist in the drama Dhobi Ghat (2010), which he also produced.[26] Further success came when he played the antagonist of the adventure film Dhoom 3 (2013) and starred as the titular alien in the ₹7.4 billion (US$110 million)-grossing satire PK (2014).[27][28][29] In 2016, Khan played the father of two young female wrestlers in the sports biopic Dangal, which earned over ₹20 billion (US$290 million) worldwide.[30] Five of Khan's films--Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3, PK, and Dangal— have held records for being the highest-grossing Indian film of all time.[1][30] In addition to acting in films, Khan has developed and featured as the host of the television talk show Satyamev Jayate (2012–14).[31]

40.Lal Singh Chaddha(2020)
Comedy, Drama |Pre-production
Story of a man with low IQ.
Director:Advait Chandan| Stars:Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Garg
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan will star in and co-produce an Indian adaptation of multiple Oscar-winning fantasy-drama “Forrest Gump.” It will go by the title “Lal Singh Chaddha.”
Khan announced his involvement on Thursday at a press event in Mumbai held for his 54th birthday. Aamir Khan Productions will co-produce alongside Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. Advait Chandan, who was the first assistant director on AKP’s “Dhobi Ghat” and debuted as director with “Secret Superstar,” will direct.
Khan said that principal photography would start in October, after six months of preparation. The film will release in 2020.
“I have always loved “Forrest Gump” as a script,” said Khan. “It is a wonderful story about this character. It is a life-affirming story. It is a feel good film. It is a film for the whole family.”
Khan’s last outing as an actor, “Thugs of Hindostan,” was a box office disappointment in 2018.
His “Dangal” is India’s all-time highest worldwide box office grosser with global earnings of more than $300 million, including $193 million in China. Khan has two more films in India’s top 10 “Secret Superstar” and “PK.”
Released in 1994, Paramount Pictures’ “Forrest Gump” won six Oscars, including best picture, best actor for Tom Hanks, best director for Robert Zemeckis, and adapted screenplay, editing and visual effects.

Indian Bollywood actor Aamir Khan (3L) with cast members Fatima Sana Shaikh, (2L), Sanya Malhotra (2R) and Indian amateur wrestler and Olympic coach Mahavir Singh Phogat's daughters Babita Phogat (R) and Geeta Phogat (L) attend a screening of the biographical sports drama Hindi film 'Dangal,' based on the life of amateur wrestler and Olympic coach, Mahavir Singh Phogat, (3R) in Mumbai on December 20, 2016. Together, they defy all odds. His daughter Geeta Phogat became India's first female wrestler to win a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth games, and the first female wrestler to represent India at the Olympics. Her sister Babita too has won multiple international accolades.

During its release last December in India, Dangal grossed approximately $60 million USD. Since its release on May 5 in China, it has already exceeded this figure, having made more than 487 million yuan ($70.7 million USD) at the box office, according to state news agency Xinhua. That makes it the highest-grossing Indian film ever in China.
Chinese appeal
What makes this an even more intriguing feat is that until recently, China wasn’t considered part of the “traditional” foreign market for Indian films--which includes regions such as the United States, United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates, all of which are home to a significant Indian diaspora.
So why is the film so compelling to Chinese audiences?
For many of the same reasons it was a huge hit in India, it would seem. Several of the film’s most important themes struck a strong emotional cord with Indian audiences. The status of women in society, particularly rural society, and a bias toward male children for example, are issues China also battles with. The importance of filial piety, the ambition of those that live in villages, cut off from opportunity and so all the more desperate to triumph, and the patriotism associated with sport, similarly appear to have resonated with Indian and Chinese audiences alike, pointing to the fact that the two countries have several shared social concerns and aspirations.

Dangal’s success also validates beyond doubt what many industry analysts have been hinting at for a while now--that the massive Chinese market holds a lot of potential for Indian films--and Aamir Khan for one, seems to have been listening.
Aamir Khan capitalizes on social media
In fact, even back in 2011, his mega-hit film, 3 Idiots, was released in China to massive fanfare after breaking multiple box-office records in India. It too dealt with an important social issue--the severity of academic pressure faced by students in engineering schools--a matter that young audiences in both countries immediately related to.

Aamir KhanWith Dangal, Khan has magnified his appeal. He embarked on an extensive publicity tour across China before the release, and has even made his mark on Chinese social media. He’s among the only Bollywood stars active on Weibo, having created his first-ever post in April to promote Dangal. Now, after its tremendous success, he has over 450,000 followers, more than Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who with under 200,000 followers, used to be the most-followed Indian on Chinese social media.

With Bahubali 2breaking records in North America, and Dangal breaking records in China, Indian films are increasingly proving their global marketability. Bollywood is on its way to achieving the sort of international appeal that was once the domain of Hollywood alone.
